Casting Call

Posted by Norma @ 7:36 am

How many of you watched Susan Boyle sing on Britain’s Got Talent? At first glance, most music executives or talent scouts would have probably said no and not given her a second thought. However, thanks to the TV show and to others like it, individuals like Susan Boyle are given the chance to show their talent before they can be judged by their looks or appearance. Thank goodness for these types of shows because the woman can sing!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY

There are so many people who judge by appearance and so many people don’t really get the opportunity to show what they can do. In today’s employment world, it can be very much the same. As an HR professional, I have seen so many managers choose final candidates based on who was most physically appealing, who appeared to be more professionally dressed, or who fit in more with the group. While these things may be important to some extent, I must say that these should not be the basis for choosing a candidate. At the end of the day, a candidate not only has to be able to perform the job, but also has to be able to adapt and grow with the company as it changes and grows just as an artist has to be able to perform and sell records for his or her record label.

For those candidates who are looking for a forum to showcase their talent, start looking into internships. Believe it or not, an internship is the same concept as American Idol or America’s Got Talent or Britain’s Got Talent. When you send your resume and/or portfolio to a company, you are auditioning for a position. When you land that interview, it is the same as making it to the Hollywood rounds. If you are selected as an Intern, it is the same as though you made it to the top 10 or 12. This is your opportunity to really show the company your talent. You have to be yourself but you can’t be shy. You have to bring it or perform every day and be willing to take risks by stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. Your career is in your hands at that point so you have to help make it worth your while.

EMG offers internship opportunities to students from many schools in a variety of areas. We select interns who show potential for the industry as well as for the company. Our internship program is still young and growing but can be an opportunity of a lifetime. If you’re ready for this challenge, send us your audition packet…….follow this link to learn more……. http://www.earthboundmediagroup.com/index/careers/internship-program.html

Good call Norma! EMG has hired several of its interns over the years after they show us “they have talent” and they don’t have to be a Susan Boyle either!! (although I do have to say that our interns are usually stars in the making!!)

I agree. There is nothing more annoying than to see a candidate get hired based on appearance or a personality trait that has nothing to do with their function at the company. While these things can be an added bonus, they do you no good if your skills aren’t up to snuff.

Another thing is ego. A candidate may be confident, motivated, and even skilled, but if they have an ego and are self-serving then the team and company as a whole will take a backseat and suffer in the long run.

BTW… I think Susan Boyle is great and talented, but I really enjoyed Paul Potts from a few seasons ago. I think his story (and the first time he appeared on the show) is far more inspiring than Susan’s.

As a college instructor dealing with students who are anxious about their professional future it is good to know there are companies like EMG who look at a candidate’s fit within the team and how all will benefit by his/her selection. I have often talked about the need to embrace the industry one is interested in and soak up all you can to better succeed within it. Thanks EMG for encouraging those who feel they may not have the right ‘look’ for their chosen profession to build their motivation from within. People will see who they truly are by their desire.
